Handwoven Hamadan Rugs
Hamadan rugs originate from a city located in west central Iran. Hamadan is an old city, dating back to several hundred years before Christ. It and the surrounding villages make up one of the largest trade centers for tribal rugs. This area is known for making tribal rugs with a strong Turkish influence. Some of these rugs were long narrow types commonly used as floor rugs for sleeping which led to their use as stair runners. These rugs are coarsely woven but substantial items. The wool used for weaving these rugs is extremely durable as it comes from sheep living in higher altitudes in cooler weather. Hamadan weavers use Turkish knots for their rugs and they are all flat woven.
